If the stored cord blood stem cells are required for stem cell transplant, you can retrieve the sample by submitting a retrieval request from the transplant physician. Necessary HLA typing test is done for the recipient for ensuring a perfect match. The cells are then transported in a special container called “Dry Shipper” for shipping the frozen sample to the stem cell therapy center. The dry shipped is filled with liquid nitrogen to maintain the cord blood stem cells are less than -150 degrees centigrade during transport.
Thawing of the sample is performed under strict guidelines to ensure the highest viability of stem cells are recovered after the thaw.
You are not required to pay for retrieving the stored sample since it belongs to your baby. However you would be required to bear the cost of shipping, handling and service charge for shipping the stem cells.
